BEIJING: China is preparing to build a Sichuan-Tibet railway between Linchi and Tibet in the southwestern part of Sichuan province near the Indian border in Arunachal Pradesh. Experts say it is important for both Tibet and China.
On Saturday, China Railway announced that it would build two tunnels, a bridge and a power supply project for the Sichuan-Tibet Railway’s Ya-A-Linji section. Linchi is located on the Arunachal Pradesh border. While China claims that Arunachal Pradesh is part of southern Tibet, India opposes it.
The Sichuan-Tibet Railway in Tibet is the second such project after the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. It will be built through the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, the world’s most active geological region, according to China’s state-run newspaper China News.
It will be easier to travel to Lhasa on the Sichuan-Tibet Railway, which starts in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province. It now takes six hours to get from Chengdu to Lhasa. The Sichuan-Tibet railway will take only 13 hours.
The 1,011-kilometer-long railway is expected to run at speeds of 120 to 200 kilometers per hour. The Global Times reported that $ 314.6 billion would be spent on this.
